How to Learn German

So, just how long does it really take to learn a language properly? Well, the latest evidence has proven that it takes the brain six months until it begins creating new long-term pathways. This means that your long-term retention of the German language does not begin until six months of practice.
The progress you make prior to that six months will be rapid.
However, you need to continue to that point and beyond to truly lock
the language into your mind for good. Plus, everything will start to
get a lot easier for you at that point in time. The structure of the
language, grammar, vocabulary... and so forth.
Step 1 - Start Speaking German
The most important first step is simply to learn some basic words and start speaking. Since this is also the most enjoyable part of learning a language, it will help to get you motivated and excited about your new language!
Make a list of some really basic words that you'd like to know...
Hello
Goodbye
Yes
No
Please
Thankyou
Sorry
Excuse me
...and so forth. Then find out how to say these in German.
Step 2 - Learn the Alphabet
This is really a critical thing to do right at the beginning. By learning the German alphabet, you'll ensure that you can read and pronounce any German word. Sure, you won't understand them all just yet, but the mere fact that you can read and pronounce them correctly is extremely important.
Luckily, for English speakers, this is quite easy. The German
alphabet contains all 26 letters of the English Alphabet, as well as a
few extras. It really won't take long at all.
Step 3 - Boost Your Vocabulary
Now that you can read German words, the next step is to boost your vocabulary.
There are many ways you can do this. We recommend using an
"integrated" language program (see below for more details on this), and
of course you can use phrase books, text books, audio phrase guides,
and many more. One thing you should definitely do at this stage is to
buy yourself an English-German dictionary. You will use this constantly.
Step 4 - Learn the Rules
Everyone's least favorite topic - Grammar. Now that you have a decent knowledge of vocabulary, it's time to learn the rules that govern the German language.
Grammar always seems daunting, however there are some things you can do to make this easier for yourself. Using an "integrated" language program will enable you to learn key grammar concepts as you go, which is definitely the quickest way to learn German.
You can also try the "one-concept, one-example" technique. As the
name suggests, just take one grammar concept at a time. Learn one
example off by heart for that concept. Then you should know it so well
you can simply apply it across every instance.
For example...
If you look at German nouns, you will discover that there are 3
genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter). You'll also notice that when
you use adjectives with these nouns, their endings will change
depending on the gender, and also depending on which "case" they take.
This seems overwhelming, but if you simply take one example in each
gender (eg. yellow chair(m), yellow banana(f), yellow car(n)) and learn
how to change the endings of these words in all cases, you will then be
able to apply the same to all words from those genders.
Step 5 - Use It
Now that you're comfortable with the key grammar concepts, learning German becomes a lot more enjoyable. You can start thinking and speaking like a German, and this will happen quickly.
At this stage, it is important to practice regularly and use all 4
language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). The best
"formula" to learn German most effectively seems to be a little bit of
practice each day, between 30-60
minutes, or for as long as it is enjoyable. If it feels like hard work,
take a break. Go watch a German movie instead!
Step 6 - Expand Your Horizons
The final step to speaking German like a German, is to expand your horizons. The opportunities are endless. Watch German movies and cartoons. Read German books, magazines and newspapers. Join a German club, or find a German penpal.
Best of all - Go to Germany!!! This is the best way to immerse
yourself in the language, especially since you'll be hearing colloquial
German all around you. It is so much fun to interact with the German
people and learn more about this fascinating country and language.
